India, U.S. to Resume Trade Talks Tuesday

(MENAFN) Negotiations between India and the United States on a bilateral trade agreement will restart Tuesday, the American ambassador-designate to New Delhi announced Monday.

New Delhi and Washington have conducted multiple negotiation rounds seeking a commercial pact after US President Donald Trump's administration slapped a 50% tariff on India—with half imposed as punishment for New Delhi's continued acquisition of Russian oil.

The South Asian economic powerhouse will receive an invitation to join Pax Silica next month, Sergio Gor revealed, referencing a US-led framework to construct a silicon supply chain spanning critical minerals through semiconductors and artificial intelligence, media reported.

"Both sides continue to actively engage. In fact, the next call on trade will occur tomorrow," Gor said in New Delhi on Monday, adding that the two countries will continue to work on issues such as security, counterterrorism, energy, technology, education, and health.

"The United States and India are bound not just by shared interests, but by a relationship anchored at the highest level," Gor said, adding that "real friends can disagree, but always resolve their differences in the end."

Blame Game Over Stalled Agreement
Gor's remarks follow last week's claim by US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick that a trade deal collapsed because Prime Minister Narendra Modi refused Washington's demand that he telephone the US president to finalize terms.

Trump has publicly backed congressional legislation that would grant him authority to impose comprehensive sanctions on Russia's trading partners.

India Pursues Multiple Trade Corridors
New Delhi finalized three commercial agreements—with the UK, Oman, and New Zealand—in 2025. India is simultaneously pursuing trade arrangements with approximately a dozen additional nations or trading blocs, including the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, currently on a two-day India visit, stated Monday that he anticipates an EU free trade agreement with New Delhi could be signed at a summit scheduled for later this month.

Following discussions with Merz, Modi characterized Berlin as New Delhi's most crucial trading partner within the EU.
